at would be the mother of all endgames, probably even the end

Why? Microsoft users use Intel, Transmeta, and AMD chips among others. You can't EVEN tell which chip you are using when you work.

What difference does it make other than speed?

I mean if AMD chips get so fast that they completely obliviate the advantages of Altavec why would you care? And it doesn't even mean the abandonment of PPC chips necessarily. You could still have a PPC in a Powerbook if you don't like Transmeta chips. Linux runs on PPC AND x86 chips. BSD probably runs on PPC AND x86 chips. Who cares? NOBODY. All that matters is speed and cost. Why should Apple limit itself? Loyalty?

The end of Apple is guaranteed to come if AMD/Intec get to 5GHz while PPCs are still laboring under 1.5 and Apple is trying to deal with obsolete RAM, motherboard problems, lack of choice etc.

Why are you guys so tied to this chip? It's just a chip. I mean if intel developed firewire would you still complain and demand SCSI? Is anyone crying about IDE harddrives? NOPE!
