If PCS has 18,300 base stations using 30,500 carriers, this suggests to me that they are averaging less than 2 carriers per base station. I believe even the smallest PCS-band license has enough spectrum for 3 carriers, with most giving enough spectrum for many more carriers than that.

This suggests that as a system, PCS is far from bandwidth limited. If you are not bandwidth limited, then there is no reason to spend money to increase your subscribers/MHz ability. Cheaper to put up carriers than to convert old carriers to 1X, isn't it?

So why should PCS be interested in spending money to upgrade to 1X? Anyone know?

- They added 300 cell sites and 1250 carriers in Q2. Expect full year numbers will be 2400 and 3300. Total are currently 18,300 and 30,500.
