You are making a valid point that from the beginning of time to very recent memory, "soldiers" have been asked to do insane and horrendous things by leaders who were mad, barbaric, and/or without conscience. Naturally, few Americans accept the notion that that has ever characterized our nation, or Western civilization, for that matter. We certainly have (or should have) the power of discrimination to differentiate between civilized people and uncivilized ones. For the few who still don't see it that way, we (as a civilized nation) allow them to opt to be conscientious objectors in time of war, and avoid taking part. As to the Kamikazes, we never considered them war criminals, no matter how we were baffled by their actions in a hopeless cause. We prosecuted a small number of high ranking officers for ordering the slaughter of civilians or POWs, and even that was controversial at the time.
