Future generations will have plenty to be lathered up about when they contemplate us.

Big overstatement. They will find things to criticize, and things to applaud. That is in comparing one century of the U.S. against a later one. We do that right now, as in looking fondly at "the good old days," while also acknowledging its warts. When it comes to judging the U.S. of 2002 relative to its times, relative to the rest of the world, I think the appraisal will be far more generous. At least I'd like to hope so, if future generations are allowed to study their history with no distortion or rewriting.
