I worked as a Java developer for a few dot coms that used sun servers for the site, but Windows for development. It's easy to see how Sun lost a big market there since these dot coms spent 100k a server and those servers went back on the market used. Also, these companies relied on Global Crossing and Quest and I assume Worldcom for hosting and those companies built huge server farms, but are now bankrupt or near it.

As far as whether unix is better than microsoft or maybe linix on intel it's hard to say. Often these decisions are made based on what people are familiar with, so it seems unlikely sun's market will vanish, but also unlikely it will grow rapidly without an internet boom. Of course, that's true with many tech stocks.
