CBOE VIX data goes back only to 1986. In those 16 years, we find 7 instances where VIX entered the 40+ area, not counting the current instance. 1987, 1988 (3x), 1990, 1998, & 2001.

Of the 7X:

- The high in VIX was on the same day 3x (43%)
- The high in VIX was the following trading day 2x (29%)
- The high in VIX was 4 days later 1x (14%)
and
- The sore thumb was 1998 when the peak was 29 days later.

Right now we have a 9 day streak going. So yes, as measured by the VIX this is an extraordinary flush.
