US accounts problem hits Stagecoach

Stagecoach yesterday said there had been "accounting irregularities" in its troubled US business, which was audited by the same Houston office of Andersen that was involved in the Enron scandal.

Stagecoach bought Coach USA for £1.2bn in 1999. It had previously been audited by the Houston office of Andersen, which has been convicted of obstructing justice over its part in the Enron scandal.

However, Stagecoach is believed not to have revealed details of the problem, understood to have been discovered after an employee tip-off, because of a confidentiality agreement with Andersen.
