Tim; We all understand that Israel is NOW (today) the most successful, diversified economy in the region, but they were not back in 1949.

The aid was not huge until 1974. I think its fair to say that by the early 70s Israel was the most successful diversified economy in the region.

Due to the fact that they are so successful and diversified TODAY why are we still giving them billions annually?

Because they are our ally and they face a military threat for multiple arab countries that have far more people, and larger (if less skilled and less well equipped) military forces then Israel.

Also we give Egypt almost as much as we give Israel.
