(AWE - news), the nation's third-largest wireless telephone company, on Tuesday said it expected significantly fewer net subscriber additions in the third quarter compared with the second quarter. The Redmond, Washington-based firm had added 417,000 net new customers in the second quarter, compared with analysts' expectations of about 550,000. AT&T Wireless blamed a slowdown in industrywide subscriber growth as well as negative customer growth from WorldCom Inc. , which said earlier this year it would exit the wireless business. WorldCom, which declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this week, sold wireless service under its own brand using other companies' networks including AT&T Wireless.
