Mike, I feel you’re your pain and hope the market is at or close to a bottom. On the other hand I remember my first two stock purchases in the early 70’s. After the loss then it took me 10 years before I put my foot back in the water and then used protective stops to limit my downside (did this with Citibank at around 14 and sold it lower at apx 12). Only after making pretty good gains did I foolishly abandon the strategy of cutting my losses and started added to positions as prices eroded over the past couple of years (buying the dips). Thankfully, I never used margin nor was I ever fully invested. Those were the good old days when investors thought they could do no wrong, myself included.

Investor psychology is now as bad as I have ever seen it. Most people hate to admit to owning stocks and are ashamed of having huge losses. At some point in time all this will change. I just hope it won’t take 10 years.

I am still buying but am scared to death. Just picked up some Citibank today, MSFT yesterday, and WBSN last week. I have lots of semi/semi equipment stocks that are all under water except for my TXN and hesitate adding more from that group.

In a few weeks my son and his wife will be coming to NY with their new baby. That should help keep me from dwelling on where the market will be going over the short term.
