<Taiwan's will to remain separate is changing to a wish of not being kept out.>

And how Britain came to have an empire. It was not at the point of a barrel of a gun, but the barrel of oil, shipment of machinery, purchase of tea, trading in textiles, rubber, steel and paid for in gold ... oops, who said that?!!!

Perhaps the process of Taiwan's association with China will be like Hong Kong's, except that there isn't a lease to expire.

I expect you are right that they will be more concerned not to be kept out. When Australia cuts a link to NZ, the squealing is from this side of the water. Actually, the similarity between Australia and NZ and China and Taiwan is something I've never really considered, but there is a strong resemblance.

China doesn't need to invade, threaten or much else. Just continue economic development and wait for the begging to start.

Freedom and democracy are nice, but the freedom is in theory only [in NZ, USA and other great lovers of freedom], democracy is the right to vote to take other people's money and boss them around, which has limited attraction for those on the losing side of the vote. Prosperity, peace, light and harmony are more important and if China provides those, then even I might move there [if they'll have me].
