Future Horizons sees recovery

Industry analyst Malcolm Penn, chairman and CEO of research group Future Horizons, says there are clear signs of a recovery next year but 2002 will continue to be tough.

He predicts that the overall value of worldwide semiconductor output will grow by 3.6% during 2002, but for Europe it will be — 7% as a result of manufacturing capacity moving to the Far East.

"It's 3.6% growth only if average selling prices (ASPs) stabilise and start to go up," added Penn. "Pricing is holding back market growth. It is profitless growth at the moment — we're not making the margins.

"We're running hard to get nowhere. It's awful, we need an ASP increase."

But for 2003, Penn expects to see worldwide growth of 26.3%: "The three horsemen should be pulling together by Q1 2003, but the biggest problem is the possibility of a double dip in the US economy. 2003 should be good — hang on to your hats."
