Mugabe - wanting to be civilized and wear his hat just right, but can't quite figure out how the heck to do it, meanwhile, feeling put upon by the Machinating British, just as Ian Smith did before him. He and Ian obviously had something in common! Perhaps the British influence wasn't as malign as they both claim/ed.

Hong Kong did okay with British influence for a century.

So did Maoris.
