I see that more as par for the course than as a new level of moral rot.

I guess the fact that several people here (and numerous people elsewhere) have readily "defended" Clinton with what I call the "everybody else does it" or "other people are bad too" defenses indicates the level of moral rot involved.

In 1992, the election came out exactly the way I wanted it to. I thought Bush hadn't earned another four years, that the deficit was the most pressing issue to be dealt with, and that Ross Perot was a loonie but his "one issue" candidacy had made some extremely important points. That left Clinton, at the time an enigmatic moderate with some morality issues but obvious intellect and extraordinary speaking ability. I felt at the time that an outcome where Clinton won but by a narrow margin, with Perot getting so many votes his issues could not be ignored, would be the best road forward.

That is exactly what happened, and for awhile it seemed to work. The sad part is that Clinton just couldn't seem to understand what the office of the Presidency means to people. He couldn't seem to grasp that it wasn't just about specific partisan issues but about broad based moral authority and leadership, not just of Americans but of people around the world. Many Presidents haven't grasped that. The current President has grasped it at times but not so well at other times.

I think history, many years from now, may lump together Presidents Clinton and Nixon in the same category. There are a lot more parallels than commentators today have focused on.
