wbmw: Assuming the article in question about AMD's Hammer was correct, it would appear that AMD is trying to reset the expectations for Hammer performance to a lower level.
A 20 to 25% performance increase for a 2 GHz Hammer (over a 2200+ Athlon) seems way below the AMD fan boy expectations.

A further problem with the over active AMD Hammer Hype Engine (thanks for calling my attention to this) is that AMD will most likely be starting a double-Osbourne effect.
AMD's second quarter steep drop off in Athlon/Duron sales may be due in part to the AMD fan boys salivating over the upcoming Hammer and delaying their Athlon upgrades. AMD's prognostication on third quarter sales seems to indicate a growing trend here for lower CPU sales.
When the Hammer does arrive next year, the lower than expected performance may cause the AMD fan boy base to go into shock and delay purchase of the Hammer at that time - and perhaps wait for the next generation Hammer on 90 nM technology that AMD so often hypes.
This would then be the second Osbourne effect, resulting in not only diminished Athlon sales but diminished Hammer sales early next year as well.
It would be interesting to know if AMD's Hammer problems are design related or process/manufacturing related. Any idea?
