mepci, re GM "insurance premium"

FWIW, GM doesn't necessarily pay an insurance premium for health coverage. All claims are self-funded and paid at the well-head at the time a claim is made. They pay for administrative, bill-handling services only.

Some of these accounting bugaboos are possible attempts to move American companies into the same status as European firms.

I am always suspicious when Europeans start calling for changes in the way US accounts for business. I'm surprised that Buffett, a midwesterner, would go along with some of the changes Europeans are calling for. Europe doesn't have the equivalence of an SEC and has less than 20% of their total asset base invested in stocks. The US has greater assets in stocks and a strong SEC. Any detrimental changes in US accounting measures may effectively serve the European competitive efforts, not ours.

And some on WS, I'm sure, would like nothing more than to see the back of US business break in order to increase the size of their accounts.
