Full disclosure: a million numbers from a thousand departments on the web... I'm fully confident that individuals who are affected by one or another, or a group, will find ways to read, follow, digest, protest.
It's already happening. There is a website that disclosed the $80 billion farm bill, down to the neighborhood! All you need to do is type in a region, or even individual town, and see all the actual names of people on the public farm dole, in your neighborhood, and the amount of dollars they are in for. Beautiful...
This wasn't a government-sponsored site, just a motivated group.
All that government needs to do is tell departments to allow their already-electronic data to be available. Someone will certainly put in web format. There is someone affected by every dollar spent by our government. Hiding it is SOP, up to this point, which creates corruption in politics. Now it's time to disclose it, at all levels. |
