Microsoft Maintains Strong Product Momentum, Gates Says

REDMOND, Wash. -(Dow Jones)- Microsoft Corp. (MSFT - News) expects to increase its employee base over the coming year as well as increase research and development spending to foster future growth.

The company plans to increase its employee base by more than 5,000 over the coming year, Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates said Microsoft 's annual financial analyst meeting Thursday.

R&D spending in fiscal 2003 will rise to $5.2 billion, or more than 16% of revenue. This represents growth of more than 20% of R&D spending in 2002.

The company is maintaining its strong product momentum, Gates said. Microsoft 's SQL Server 2000 and Windows XP have been momentum drivers, he said.
