Refsnarting back to a more generic Unix? "Solaris can't be written to x86? I figured they might have a future as a software company." Yes, of course it can (easily) be ported to the x86. In fact, Sun sold such a box, the "386i" in the late 80s. And their Cobalt x86-based servers may now be running Solaris...I'd have to check on this. This does not mean Solaris will survive. The trends are distinctly _away_ from proprietary OSes, unless from Microsoft. And the prices Sun has been attempting to get for Solaris will not last long. Sun has been considering Linux for its core OS, which makes some sense. A lot of x86 boxes run Linux, or one of the BSDs, so Sun may have to refsnart back to a BSD-related OS. --Tim May
