To all on Semi-Equip thread: obviously everything on the NAZ is down today but semi-equips have been hit hard due to comments from Taiwan Semi that they are cutting back on Cap-ex. For those of you who aren't familiar with them Taiwan Semi is a foundary or contract chip mfg. co. My question is this: is this a negative indicator for chip equip cos. because demand is still weak across all areas or is there possibly another interpretation.

My suggestion of the "other interpretation" is this. Foundaries like Taiwan Semi do work for fabless companies as well as overflow work for companies that manufacture in-house. When companies that mfg. in-house get busy they may outsource more production or contract with fabs for future production. On the other side of the equation, when things are slower they may bring more manufacturing in-house. This may have the effect of bringing more mfg. in-house and may shift demand for semi-equip from fabs to semi design/manufacture cos. I guess what I'm trying to say in a round about way is that I'm not so sure that Taiwan Semi's comments are indicative of further erosion of semi equip orders.

Now, please discuss....
