ARM Shows Q2 Growth

Electronics Weekly -- Electronic News, 7/23/2002

ARM Holdings plc has reported strong results for the first six months of the year, with pretax profit up 35 percent to $49.9 million (31.9 million pounds) and licensing revenues up 52 percent to $77.1 million (49.3 million pounds). Overall revenues increased 25 percent year-on-year to $133.5 million (85.3 million pounds).

ARM Chairman Robin Saxsby said that despite the persistence of challenging market conditions the company took in record licensing revenues.

The Cambridge, England-based company is also continuing to up its investment in research and development and staff. R&D expenditure increased to 30 percent of sales, said ARM CEO Warren East. Staff numbers rose from 722 at the end of December 2001 to 768 at the end of June.

For Q2, ARM reported revenues of $67.6 million (43.2 million pounds), up 20 percent from $56.3 million (36 million pounds) a year ago and up 2 percent from the previous quarter’s $65.9 million (42.1 million pounds). Pretax profit was $25.4 million (16.2 million pounds), up 33 percent from $19.1 million (12.2 million pounds) a year ago and up 3 percent sequentially from $24.6 million (15.7 million pounds).

ARM said its performance in difficult market conditions had again proved the resilience of its business model. It also pointed out that although the company now has 99 semiconductor partners, about two-thirds of the top 150 companies have yet to license ARM technology, making them potential future licensees.

Royalty revenue growth was helped by positive movement in the consumer, networking and automotive sectors, ARM said. The wireless market was the largest end-market using ARM technology, making up 62 percent of royalty revenue and 9 percent of total revenue.

Looking to the future, ARM said its ARMv6 microarchitecture ARM11 will be delivered to partners in Q4. The company also said it expects to continue growth through the second half.
