Here is another example of a U.S. gestapo at work.

Like the SEC scam; if they can't lynch the problem
they'll sweep it under the carpet until the stench
becomes unbearable.

-----------------------

***After such a high-profile beginning, the FBI's anthrax investigation has gone curiously quiet, due to both slow progress and the embarrassing knowledge, since at least the beginning of the year, that the attacker not the spawn of an al-Qaeda cell. It was almost certainly a lone assailant who obtained the anthrax used in the mailings from a U.S. military source.

For nearly two months now, the FBI has had a lead suspect that, finally, appears to fit the bill. At this point all the evidence is circumstantial, but highly compelling. And the suggested motive is a whopper.

The suspect isn't a foreigner: it's not an Arab immigrant, a disgruntled Muslim convert from Chicago or California, or some militia guy in rural Michigan. It's no anarchist loner sitting in a cabin in the middle of the woods somewhere, cooking anthrax spores in his aluminum pans on a butane stove.

The man in question is one Dr. Steven Hatfill, a well-paid scientist and bioterror expert employed by a U.S. government military contractor.

The FBI has theorized that Dr. Hatfill (or someone like him) was motivated to send the anthrax letters post-Sept. 11 in order to put a scare into the U.S. government, the media, and the American people, with the intent being to boost funding for bioterrorism programs.

Hatfill's name came up on a short list of 20 or 30 people who have the scientific know-how to safely handle anthrax spores and turn them into a deadly biological weapon, who have been vaccinated against anthrax exposure, who have or had security clearances around the time of the attack, and who had access to the army's biodefense lab at Fort Detrick, Maryland—now recognized as the undisputed source of the anthrax found in the envelopes mailed to Democratic senators Tom Daschle and Daniel Patrick Leahy.***
