Robert,

On that Toshiba:

"Silver ultraportable is the thinnest and lightest around. Bundled second battery helps it achieve the longest battery life we've seen."

It needs two batteries to get to 6.5 hours. It seems none of those machines are significantly better than a PowerBook or iBook in battery life - and at a considerable cost in speed. I guess it can be considered natural to carry two batteries all the time. In that case a Mac will run a very long time. I have never done that.

Questions about PC laptops: When on an airplane just before landing, can you pause a movie and sleep the machine by simply closing the cover - even while the movie is running? And then after the next plane reaches altitude, will the movie start-up where it stopped simply by opening the cover? Macs are elegant in that kind of operating scenario.

Another question. Am I reading the specs right? It seems the optical drive is not included in any of the base machines but has to be bought separately as an external unit or as part of some kind of dock? So you really can't watch a movie on an airplane anyway unless you drag along the dock? Once you've added the dock or whatever, it seems the price is higher than for a much faster Mac - is that right?
