My natural grandfather was a fluor spar miner in Illinois. He thought it was terrible work, but it was all he could get. And my grandmother participated in one of the first sit down strikes in Chicago, in a textile factory of some sort. My parents were both in unions (teachers unions) and were annoyed by some aspects of the unions, but my mom and dad always mentioned the flip side of the equation- and what it was like without them. Our family was always pro- union, and I am pro- union. Though there are excesses in unions, and problematic positions (probelmatic for me, anyway), as there are in any power structure, the time before unions was truly horrible. I wouldn't want to see us go back to that. And the people who don't think we could go back to something awful, haven't studied history very well. The rights you do not guard, will not be your rights for long.
