Whether we like it or not the Cell Phone now numbering more than 1 billion in circulation is here to stay. AMAT and other related companies should benefit from the proliferation of these devices that have CHIPs in them. Unfortunately for us, good news like this is being ignored by the Market: —-

In China 65 Million out of 1.2 billion people have Cell Phones, in India 6 Million out of close to a billion people. But why should a poor country like the Philippines with only 80 million people have 13 million Cell Phones now! I thought they were crazy until I realized they buy Cell Phones not only to keep up with each other “ … see, I also can afford a Cell Phone, not only you …” but also out of necessity: —- one or both parents when they go abroad to work get separated from their Kids for 6 months to 2 years Contract that they find the Cell Phone as the convenient tool to hold their family together. Yes, the Almighty Cell Phone makes them One whole family. Unlike home phones, Cell Phones can be used anytime, anywhere not worrying about Time Zones when posting Text Messages.

Text Messaging is cheap —- 2 cents per message locally and 20 cents internationally. It doesn't cost one to receive a call or message, unlike here in the US where Cell Phone users are so wary of the cost involved in receiving calls that they tend to shut off the device from time to time.

One day a college student sent a message to his Mom working night shift as a nurse in Chicago: —- “Mom, my Bday, need money” The mother answered with: —- “OK Do homework always. Get money ATM Fri” then the following morning she sent money Bank to Bank to her son back home thousands of miles away. Here's another, the last message to her child from another mother working as a domestic helper in Israel the night before she died in a bomb blast inside a mall: —- “Go to sleep already.”

Text messaging to marshall forces was a potent weapon used to kick out the country's previous president. Before the Cell Phone was popular, they used Ham Radios to alert and form crowds that toppled another president from power. Both the Military and the Rebels including Bandits and Terrorists are using Cell Phones in their fights with each other. More than 100 million out of a billion Text Messages worldwide are generated in the country each day. Such phenomenon is being taken advantaged of by even the Cardinal of Manila by planning to issue (if not already began) passages from the Bible in Text Form to his flocks numbering more than 7 million working around the world.

How many uses of the Cell Phone are still to be realized? The limit is ones imagination. Brian, in the other AMAT Thread reported of a Disposable Cell Phone. What's next?

Now comes Nokia's Imaging Phone, with a Camera! —-

The Nokia 7650 imaging phone makes its way to the Philippines

Nokia has now started shipping its first imaging phone, the Nokia 7650 to the Philippines. With an integrated camera, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) capability and a full-color display, the Nokia 7650 phone opens up a new era in personal mobile communications.

“Mobile messaging is a unique success story: at the moment, one billion text messages are sent every day creating a continuous revenue stream for operators throughout the world. This success story is to be continued by Multimedia Messaging Service, which will further augment the messaging experience of mobile users,” said Parikshit Bhasin, Country General Manager of Nokia Mobile Phones, Nokia Philippines Inc. Nokia is a firm believer in MMS, and already next year, more that half of all new phone models we are launching will be MMS-capable.”

MMS works much the same way as SMS messages, but allows users to combine audio, graphic, text-and imaging content in one message. Multimedia Messages can then be sent to other MMS-capable phones to or recipient's email. To date, Nokia has announced four MMS-capable phones in the Asia Pacific: the Nokia 7650 and Nokia 3510 for GSM 900/1800 operating frequencies, and the Nokia 7210 and Nokia 6610 for GSM 900/1900.

“Capturing spontaneous moments with a camera is an extremely social event. We believe the Nokia 7650, with its integrated camera will bring a lot of joy to different mobile phone users, enabling them to share their feelings and important moments in a seamless manner via MMS,” says, Mr. Bhasin, “Making MMS as commonplace as text messaging is an important industry move. Together with operators and distributors, we see the imaging capabilities of the Nokia 7650 will help to boost the usage of MMS. Complementing its rich set of features is the variety of imaging services and applications that consumers can enjoy with Nokia 7650, whether for work or leisure.”

The imaging fuctionalities o the Nokia 7650 include an integrated digital camera with image taking and sending, a photo album for storing pictures, and a large 176x208 pixel color display. The advanced graphical user interface and joystick with 5-way navigation add ease and speed to the use of this new device.

User will be able to upload images from the phone to Club Nokia Photozone*, create and share photo albums, and even have fun editing them in the special effects studio. Additionally, users will also get to enjoy the new exciting AirCards** application which allows one to send snapshots taken with the Nokia 7650 as physical postcards to friends and family.

The Nokia 7650 also delivers a full range of functions for professional needs in the EGSM900/1800 environment. These include GPRS and HSCSD connections, WAP, wireless Bluetooth and infrared connectivity, email and MIDP Java support. The Symbian Operating System (OS) allows the phone to be customized by individual users and corporations. A variety of compatible downloadable applications for the Nokia 7650 may be purchased from club Nokia (www.club.-nokia.com.ph) and the Nokia Software Market (www.softwaremarket.nokia.com)
