My wife was the Staff Council President for a few years when she was Assistant Director of Admissions at St. John's. When she was Director of Alumni Activities, she was a member of the central committee for executive staff, and chaired various things. I sometimes wrote things for her, and helped her to strategize, so I was close to things in each case. We stopped several abuses by the upper- level administration or the faculty, in one case directly saving a man's job because some people were not willing to follow the rules to get rid of him. There were definitely times that we kicked around the idea of promoting unionization among the staff, since the internal council and committee were fairly weak. Nevertheless, we did not because it would have been too adversarial, and would rub against everyone's feelings of community. I understand that there are economic problems with unions, especially when they collude with management to win concessions from the government, such as promoting protectionist legislation. But I cannot deny that I have seen things make me think that unions are sometimes a good idea, and that the threat of unionization is always a good idea......
