SEOUL, Korea--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 30, 2002--

KT will quadruple capacity of its existing city-to-city networks

Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) today announced that it has been awarded a contract to supply KT with an advanced optical system that will allow KT to quadruple capacity of its existing networks.

This marks the first major introduction of 10-gigabit technology to South Korea's largest communications service provider's long-distance transmission networks.

Under the terms of the contract, Lucent will deliver 25 WaveStar(r) TDM 10G (STM-64) systems by the end of September to upgrade KT's current 2.5 gigabit-based city-to-city networks in Gyunggi, Chungcheong, Jeonra and Gangwon province to 10G capacity-based networks. The commercial service is scheduled to start this November.

"We believe that Lucent's TDM 10G system will help us to maintain our networks more easily and efficiently with reduced per-bit transmission costs and will assist both KT and our customers in their efforts to reduce costs, while increasing network reliability," said Yong-soo Kim, director, Network Planning Group of KT.

"Lucent has supplied various kinds of optical networking systems to KT for many years," said John Yang, president and chief executive officer, Lucent Technologies Korea. "This project from KT, following last September's award to supply dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) equipment, demonstrates Lucent's commitment to deliver more 10G optical transmission systems for future growth as well as enhancing our already strong presence in the Korean optical networking market."

The WaveStar(r) TDM 10G (STM-64) will enable KT to deliver optical services at rates of up to 10 gigabits per second per wavelength and support current services as well as new applications through a scalable and flexible system. A 10 Gb/s line rate is capable of transmitting up to 2 million one-page emails or 130,000 simultaneous phone calls per second.

Developed by Lucent's Bell Labs, the system will also help KT reduce operating expenses through advanced self-healing networks, network management capabilities and superior carrier grade reliability. It also offers flexible integration of IP/SDH with cutting edge gigabit ethernet capabilities, enabling new revenue-generating ethernet service offerings while focusing on reducing capital expenditures. An integrated DWDM capability, based on Metropolis(r) passive DWDM, also provides for a cost-effective solution in metropolitan and backbone networks.

Lucent has provided KT with optical networking systems including WaveStar(r) OLS systems, WaveStar(r) DWDM systems, and WaveStar(r) ADM 16/1since 1998 to build KT's backbone networks in Korea.
