oh
it sure sounded like you wanted to throw them out for some other, as yet undefined, system where workers did their own thing by cleverly organizing in little groups around issues. (Do you think anyone would really have time to do that? Having tried to organize volunteers for various things, I am less than sanguine).

I don't think you do know how I would react. I'm trying to imagine how my union would foil my attempts to teach- but lets say it didn't like the clearinghouse idea. I like the union enough I would stay in it, and build a clearinghouse off site on the net. The union, at least in our district, protects people with different styles. I know myself well enough to know that I need that kind of protection. I try to be like everyone else, but it is just an act. Sooner or later I'll do something innovative that gets me in trouble. And when I do I want my union. It will be worth not getting everything I want, to have their protection if/when I need it.
