All - A point that I think people are missing is that there probably is a niche which other ASIC vendors can exploit - the low end. Qualcomm chips do everything under the sun, and are continually evolving new ancillary abilities. No one is likely to catch up with this and compete effectively, but the true standards (e.g. 1X) are evolving much less rapidly and could allow a competitor to actually catch up. Hop On is the first story. Perhaps there will be others. I personally wouldn't bet on the success of the other chipmakers to make successful low end 1x chips, but it isn't completely improbable IMO. Of course all this assumes that there is a market for low end - not necessarily a great assumption.
