Dave,

When I was a child a train passed through the valley a couple miles south most nights. I grew up listening to that wonderful sound of whistle and track clatter. Even then (50s and 60s) it was freight only, my parents used to ride it to the next town for dances, back the same night. Now it is a "rails-to-trails" project with a lot of work left to be done.

Actually got my first train ride last fall when I visited Chicago, if public transit counts.

I am not counting innumerable rides on a small train that used to run in the summer nearby on a two mile loop through the woods and around a field. The cars were about eight feet long and held six adults. It was right next to the Dairy Queen and owned by the same people. A cone and a train ride was a standard thing after an afternoon at the beach.
