Microsemi Introduces New Dual Channel Regulator for Power Supplies, Microprocessors and Step-Down Power Conversion Applications

-- 1 Amp Low Dropout Regulator Provides Two Independently Regulated Outputs in a Single Low Profile Surface Mount Package

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 30, 2002-- Microsemi Corp. (Nasdaq:MSCC - News), a leading manufacturer of analog and mixed signal integrated circuits today announced a new dual channel low dropout regulator (LDO) targeted at low-voltage, high-current power management applications that include CD-ROM and hard disk drives, ADSL and cable modems, battery charging circuits, and wide-ranging instrumentation and PC peripheral products.

Designated the LX8816(TM), the new device provides two outputs of up to one amp, both independently regulated for highly accurate voltages -- typically +/- 1% of specified values. One output channel is at a fixed voltage and one is adjustable.

"We designed the LX8816 to provide a flexible, easy to design-in power management solution requiring a minimum amount of printed circuit board space. It's an ideal LDO solution for customers facing ever shorter design cycles," said Paul Pickle, director of marketing at Microsemi's Integrated Products group.

The LX8816's design is optimized for system efficiency, consuming minimal ground current and directing quiescent current to the load. A bipolar output transistor provides low dropout voltage even at full output current. Typical dropout is 1.2V at 1 amp and 1.1V at 500mA. Supply voltage can range from 4.3V to 10V.

Thermal and short circuit current protection are integrated on-chip, operating independently for each regulator output. By incorporating on-chip trimming of the LX8816's internal voltage, the output voltages maintain an accuracy of +/- 1%.

The LX8816 dual channel LDO, packaged in Microsemi's low profile 5-pin S-PAK surface mount package, is priced at $0.76 in 10K quantities. It is available for immediate sampling and delivery. Complete technical information is available on the Microsemi Web site, www.Microsemi.com. Samples can be ordered through this site, or from Microsemi sales representatives and franchised distributors.
