Charles: I read some more stuff on this internet phone equipment
that has AT&T and the other LD's worried. Some testers tried out
some of the new net phones and they say they're as good as making
an actual telephone call. Kingston Technologies has software that
comes with a handset so you don't need the tinny mike and speakers
on your PC, IDT's has sound quality that is excellent, and Netscape
is coming out with a new browser that incorporates CoolTalk, their
proprietary version of an internet phone system that is said to be
outstanding. MSFT is coming out with a similar upgrade on the new
Internet Explorer. The local phone stocks have been going up and
the LD's down: this is one of the reasons. This development is
supposed to be something that businesses are going to use in a big
way to cut down on expenses. When they get all this up and running,
they don't even need a computer at the other end: they just call up
the server in Timbuctu and direct the server to make the local call
at that end so no LD charges are incurred. PCS has internet capability built right into the telephone so you won't even need a
PC at the calling end. The LD's have launched an effort to get the
FCC to regulate the net phones: they're pretty worried about all
this. Like I said many times before, PCS is going to be big and
AMD makes a lot of chips for PCS applications, so this should be
very good for AMD.
