It's also a heck of a lot easier to monetize pixels too [as well as cleaner]. No oil, engine smoke, solvents and industrial age equipment to build and dispose of. Just a few mouse clicks and server space in cyberspace. Simple, clean, cheap, effective, safe, secure, reliable ... etc.

Nevertheless, mines are great. Butte is impressive and so is Bingham copper mine. Great huge holes, like works of art, visible even from space. When they've finished, they could paint them in spirals or something; monuments to amazing human achievements in the 20th century.
