This whole period is starting to remind me of the S&L scandals from the '80s. Previously (and perhaps still) the greatest financial debacle to land on the backs of the American taxpayers.

What people don't seem to remember was that - to bail out rich depositors and their cronies - the US picked up the tab for business failures. The taxpayers are still paying for that (on the national debt)... and the interest on that debt-financed bail-out will push the cost close to $1 Trillion before it's all over (*many* years from now).
