7:43AM Jack in the Box Q3 earns rise, but sales soft (JBX) by Tomi Kilgore
Jack in the Box (JBX) reported fiscal third quarter earnings that matched expectations while sales continued to hurt by "significant" competitive activity and economic weakness in certain markets. Net earnings for the quarter ending June were $24.2 million, or 60 cents a share, up from $21 million, or 53 cents a share in the same period a year ago. Total revenue rose 6.1 percent to $461 million, while sales for company restaurants open more than a year fell 1.5 percent. The fast food chain also reiterated its fiscal fourth quarter earnings forecast of 67 cents a share. The stock closed Tuesday down $1.05 at $28.40.


7:30AM Hot Topic warns of Q2, Q3 shortfall (HOTT) by Tomi Kilgore
Hot Topic (HOTT) warned that fiscal second quarter results would fall short of expectations due to "disappointing" men's apparel sales. The company added that, based on current sales trends, August sales and fiscal third quarter earnings may not meet expectations. The specialty apparel retailer is now expecting earnings of 13 cents a share and revenue of $92 million for the quarter ending July, and a comparable-store sales decline of 3 to 4 percent. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call had been expecting earnings of 15 cents a share and revenue of $93.2 million, on average. For the third quarter, the company is now anticipating earnings of 27 to 29 cents a share, below analyst expectations of 32 cents. The stock closed Tuesday down 38 cents at $22.45.
