i've been hearing that some of the pharmas have been actually paying for generic drug manufacturers...

What are you implying that the pharmas are paying them not to produce the generic?

Big has been buying off small for years to protect profit margins in other businesses.

I heard a report that the big drug companies are using multiple court actions to stay the loss of patent protection. When they file they automatically get a 30 day extension. Since they have patented several different aspects of the drugs, the formula, the color of the pill, the absorption rate, etc. They can file one action, get thirty days, lose the court action, file another, get thirty more days....on and on until they have forestalled the generic long enough to make the generic company lose whatever they have invested in producing the generic.

There is pending legislation to prevent that kind of thing.
