At least 15 illegal miners killed in cave-in at Zimbabwe gold mine
Tue Jul 30, 4:41 AM ET
By MICHAEL HARTNACK, Associated Press Writer

HARARE, Zimbabwe - At least 15 people illegally mining gold in Zimbabwe were killed when an abandoned mine shaft caved in, media reported Tuesday.

The collapse occurred July 23, at a long-abandoned mine in Mhondoro, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) southwest of Harare, according to reports in the independent Daily News and the state-controlled Herald newspapers. The disaster was not immediately publicized because of the secrecy surrounding illegal mining.

Police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena said Tuesday that authorities were trying to verify the reports that 15 to 20 miners were killed in the collapse, which would make it the worst mining disaster since 418 people were killed in an underground explosion at a mine in 1972.

Efforts to rescue those trapped were hampered by the risk
