John, Maoris weren't 'removed'. They are still here, mixed up to a greater or lesser extent. There seems to be a common misunderstanding that Maoris were 'conquered'. That's not how it was at all, other than in isolated fighting, which usually saw plenty of Maoris from other tribes on the British side.
It's much the same as the takeover by Chinese now. They aren't taking over by conquest, they are invited in because they have money and stuff which makes them attractive to have set up shop here.
In a few years, Caucasians here will suddenly realize, as the Maoris did in the 19th century, that there sure are a lot of those Chinese foreigners around now. Better learn the lingo to get some of the money. Of course the Chinese will enforce their cultural norms and pretty soon we'll be working in their CDMA factories for low pay and making their beds in hotels so they can enjoy a comfortable holiday here.
Actually, I'm all in favour of immigration, but I'd sell citizenships at auction. Say 10,000 per year to the highest bidders. Criminals etc need not apply.
I don't agree with the fatalistic 'just is' as though we just have to mindlessly accept government drag on us. The point about pointing out how hopeless governments are is to get them off our backs.
You give a false choice. Government supply is not stable - the only shortages we've had have been government supplied. Electricity blackout in Auckland. Water dried up and nearly down to standpipes in the streets. Teacher strikes closing the schools. Air New Zealand nearly sunk due to government restrictions on ownership. Many many many examples. We haven't yet had supermarkets run out of food, or petrol stations run out of petrol, or paper producers run out of paper. Electricity isn't as essential as food, but we don't put a government department in charge of supermarkets and farms. The Russians tried that and you might recall some famines and queues.
Governments are invariably bludging destructive thugs, telling us what we can do or can't and stealing most of what we produce for their own fun and games.
