QUALCOMM Joins Open Mobile Alliance Board of Directors to Promote Open Standards and Foster Worldwide Growth of Wireless Data Applications and Services
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 1, 2002--QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - News), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced it has become a sponsor member of the new global organization, the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), and has joined the OMA board of directors. The OMA delivers open standards for the mobile industry, helping to create interoperable services that work across countries, operators and mobile terminals, and are driven by users' needs. QUALCOMM has joined the organization to show its support to the mobile community in this endeavor and to encourage further development and adoption of advanced wireless data applications and services.

QUALCOMM has a long track record of promoting openness and standards critical to the success of wireless data. From the outset, its CDMA technology supported established Internet standards, such as TCP/IP. The Company has consistently worked in close coordination with standards bodies, beginning with the IS-95 standard, to ensure broad and open availability of the best wireless technology. QUALCOMM intends to contribute to the OMA in order to foster the availability of robust and innovative wireless data applications that take advantage of such standards as MPEG-4, HTML/XML, HTTP, HTTPS, SSL, Bluetooth and GPS. The foundation for the Open Mobile Alliance was formed by the consolidation of the Open Mobile Architecture initiative and the WAP Forum. The Location Interoperability Forum (LIF), MMS Interoperability Group (MMS-IOP), SyncML Initiative Ltd. and Wireless Village initiative have also announced their intent to consolidate with the Open Mobile Alliance.
The Open Mobile Alliance will collect market requirements and define specifications designed to remove barriers to interoperability and accelerate the development and adoption of a variety of new, enhanced mobile information, communication and entertainment services and applications. The definition of these common specifications and the testing of interoperability will promote competition through innovation and differentiation, while ensuring the interoperability of mobile services across markets, terminals and operators, throughout the entire value chain.
