rob - royalty rates of cdma will be going way down - after all it's just another technology and to become part of a set of open standards, it needs to be a LOT cheaper!

In your zeal to post something negative about Qualcomm you missed the entire point of OMA. OMA is not about the air interface. To quote from the article:

"The Open Mobile Alliance will collect market requirements and define specifications designed to remove barriers to interoperability and accelerate the development and adoption of a variety of new, enhanced mobile information, communication and entertainment services and applications. The definition of these common specifications and the testing of interoperability will promote competition through innovation and differentiation, while ensuring the interoperability of mobile services across markets, terminals and operators, throughout the entire value chain. "

As for the claim that royalty rates of 5% are what is choking 3G, that is patently absurd. Do you really think that a 5% difference in price is going to make or break a consumers decision to buy a handset?
