Traficant, in fact, had become a Republican -- in practice -- during the past year or two. He voted for Hastert for House speaker over Daschle, for instance. A story on the Republican National Committee Web site ... before his indictments and trial ... disclosed that the GOP was working on getting Traficant to change his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican.

So the truth of the matter is the GOP wanted Traficant to become a member of the party.
