These airlines all failed. They weren't exactly small and the government didn't keep them in business:

Pan Am
Eastern
Braniff
People's Express

Other airlines have gone bankrupt, wiping out shareholder equity to satisfy bond holders:
America West
Continental
Northwest (I think)

TWA was on the verge of a second bankruptcy before AMR took them over.

UAL can't even get the breathing space of a merger attempt. The Dept. of Justice will stop that before it ever gets off the ground.

I've said I prefer LUV because of its financial stability. That has worked so far:
