You absolutely can use the market as a measure of volatility in this example -- in the case of stock options this would only be an issue if the company was private and did not trade. For public company there is no issue whatsoever. Expensing options is not a radical move -- it is simply acknowledging that there is a huge distortion being caused by a glaring fault in accounting standards that only exists because of intense political pressure by those who benefit from this fraud.
