JDN,

You make reference to "professional" politicians vs "citizen" politicians.
The only way "back to that" is a total...ie COMPLETE...breakdown of trends and systems that have been thousands of years in the making. Acceleration of these, more global, trends and systems has very much usurped the reasoning behind any desire to "return to simpler times".
It just may be that detrimental environmental factors will far outweigh purist political desires within the timeframe one might expect to engender or accomplish any ironing out of continental political wrinkles.
Within such a context it's obvious that the dubya administration's MO is extravagantly spurious...an insult to intelligence.
