IMHO there are a few scenarios --none too farfectched-- that could cause true capitulation.

One is massive restatement of earnings before the August 14 deadline. If all earnings become suspect, there would no longer be a P/E line of support and stocks would be a bad deal at any price until we can figure out what are true earnings.

Another is for GE Capital to announce massive losses stemming from bankruptcies of its debtors.

To be precise, I'm not claiming either one of these *will* occur, I'm claiming they are more likely than what the market currently believes them to be.
