However, that's not a catastrophe, for the US, that is. For many years the dollar was weak and the US survived and SA has a persistently weak currency --- and it's still OK here.

As far as I am concerned, there are worse things than a weak currency and I'll name a few:
1. Dishonest public administration
2. Dishonest corporate administration
3. Prospects of war or actual war
4. Unsustainable, but nevertheless rising, public and private debt
5. National hubris

Unfortunately, the US now suffers from all of these and, as I see it, the present "fever" will continue until the "disease" is cured.

And, as you imply, the "medicine" will not be pleasant.
