Point taken. But now the problem becomes cause and effect. Clearly, there is no way to know what path any of these lives would have taken had the abuse never occurred. I think that, as a society, we have been much too generous in providing people with off-the-shelf excuses for their failures, and encouraging them to take on the mantle of victimization. Traumas come in all shapes and forms, and occur to countless people whom we never hear from, simply because they sucked it up, got over it, and took personal responsibility for whatever they made of their lives following the traumatic event. Maybe there is a gene that accounts for whining all of one's life about the bad breaks you had.
