OFF TOPIC: Jackson, Glad to run into a Hong Kong denizen, since I've
had a question pending for a while on a software product line: Chinese
Language e-mail. The developer (there's a thread here on SI)
is recently renamed Zi Corp--the Zi phonetic for character. The package
seems to be increasingly offered bundled with PC's sold in Hong Kong,
China and Taiwan. It apparently lets the user type, on a 10-key pad,
the Chinese language; apparently you pick the symbol for the top first;
that leads you to the alternatives for the lower left and lower right.

My questions are:
Have you ever heard of this or similar products?
Do you think this kind of approach will have any value in the
China-centered economic area? (It's probably not much use in Japan,
for instance, since all school children learn the phonetic spelling
of words, and thus can just type phonetically to get a Japanese-language
result).

I'd appreciate your insight. Since this is off topic, you might want
e-mail me at jrstich@aol.com.

Thanks,
js
