They retained BK lawyers right after 9/11, and was probably planning for the future.

I think UAL is worth a speculative play at this point. If you bought, for example, 1000 share at $4 now, your down side is only $4000. Remember, even if they declared BK, you can claim $3000 on your capital loss and get up to 40% back, depending on your tax bracket.

Upside is much better than downside, and it's worth the $4000 gamble. And if that board approves the loan, the markets will overreact again and that would be an opportunity to sell.
