Festering sores like Afghanistan and Pakistan only get serious attention from the US after it becomes a real issue on US soil of the magnitude of the WTC attack. Iraq's location puts it strategically at the center of 2/3's of the worlds oil reserves. Saddam already has a very significant portion of that 2/3's under his control. Pakistan and India could destroy each other and the impact on the Western industrial nations would be less than if Saddam managed to control / destroy oil assets of other OPEC neighbors.
